Maureen Dowd GoT zombie brain

April 6, 2014

Maureen Dowd: “Bring Me My Dragons!” is about Game of Thrones (press for season premiere). Dowd had not watched the show,

I had no interest in the murky male world of orcs, elves, hobbits, goblins and warrior dwarves. If I was going to watch a period drama, I usually favored ones with strong women in intriguing situations, like “Mad Men,” “The Americans” and “Masters of Sex.” Besides, “Game of Thrones” sounded too dense and complicated for someone suffering from zombie brain.

Now she’s hooked.

I would yell: “BRING ME MY DRAGONS!”

And,

It all seems so tame and meaningless in Washington after Westeros.

She mentions, Senators Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Hillary Clinton; and Shakespeare.

Quoting Daniel Mendelsohn of the New York Review of Books:

…a tart Thucycididean appreciation for the way in which political corruption can breed narrative corruption, too.”

Recall also, Tufts Professor Drezner who wrote “Theories of International Politics and Zombies” has recently used ‘Game of Thrones’ to teach international politics to students at Duke.

And incidentally, what’s up with Duke? General Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, has a humanities degree from Duke and wants the military to be ready for zombie apocalypse scenarios. Duke is also the same school with the porn star undegrad, the lovely and talented Ms. Belle Knox. So, yeah Duke seems like a fun place, ya know, if you have a spare quarter-million dollars. Maureen Dowd is not the only one sufferring from zombie brain. It’s our whole society gone mad.

Dowd quotes showrunner David Benioff explaining it’s:

‘Sopranos’ meets Middle-earth

He wasn’t describing American politics and academics, but he may as well have been.
