Rebel Art (and math)

March 20, 2014

Interview: L.A. Street Artist Behind the Ted Cruz Bad Boy Posters Speaks Out” by Paula Bolyard:

Last weekend mysterious posters of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) appeared in various locations around Beverly Hills. The posters featured an image of Cruz’s head — complete with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth — photoshopped onto a heavily inked torso.

Senator Cruz tweeted:

“Saw this, but noticed an error. So I wanted to make one thing clear: I don’t smoke cigarettes.”

Ha, that guy’s funny!

Meanwhile, the artist is going by the name Sabo and blocking his face. Is this an allusion to Sabu? And if so, is Sabo also working for the Man? Is this all a constructed media event or is Senator Cruz really quick witted? Maybe both.

On twitter he describes himself:

I am the fasted censored street artist in the city of Los Angeles. I am not a Left-WIng-Zombie-Artist. I am on the edge, the only true rebel artist in LA.

And now he wants $50 for a poster. Shit, maybe I should be in the poster business.

On his website, Sabo claims:

That’s a good point. But then looking at more of his work, I realize this guy is even crazier than me, and wow there’s some serious racist stuff going on there. Like, is fag really the new nigger? Well, I guess it makes you think…

I can’t say I like all this art but take the good with the bad. As I wrote yesterday, we can’t all agree on everything but we can share what we agree. Not only can we stand on the stage with those less than credible characters and still maintain what little remains of our own credibility, we must!

The twitterverse is upon us! Graffiti from Anonymous becomes the most credible form of political speech.

Forbes: “10 Things Only Lousy Managers Say” by Liz Ryan:

God bless the bad managers we’ve struggled under, those toads and zombies who taught us so many valuable leadership lessons (all lessons of the How Not to Lead variety).

Lousy managers delude themselves that there’s a setting on the dial halfway between Human and Zombie, but there isn’t.

Because there is no halfway-zombie, that’s just a kind of zombie.

And there is no human, “we have never been”, though perhaps some heroic specimens have come close to that still noble ideal.

Soon this mendacious experiment will all be over –

CNET: “Our doom will come sci-fi-style, NASA-funded study says” by Michael Franco, reporting story about NASA study from The Guardian: “Nasa-funded study: industrial civilisation headed for ‘irreversible collapse’?” by Nafeez Ahmed:

“historical collapses were allowed to occur by elites who appear to be oblivious to the catastrophic trajectory (most clearly apparent in the Roman and Mayan cases).”

For the visual learners, “The four graphs of the apocalypse: Supply, demand and eventual oblivion” by Harrison Polites:

Forget meteor strikes, cataclysmic climate shifts and a flesh eating zombie outbreak, a new NASA funded report finds that the end of the modern society will be driven by something far more sinister… as indicated by basic economics.

It’s in the number. But like art, data is always political. See the New Republic: “The Emptiness of Data Journalism” by Leon Wieseltier, about Nate Silver:

a word or two in defense of “bullshit.”

Silver proclaimed in the interview that “we’re not trying to do advocacy here. We’re trying to just do analysis. We’re not trying to sway public opinion on anything except trying to make them more numerate.” His distinction between analysis and advocacy is a little innocent.

Neutrality is an evasion of responsibility

And when you’re under fire, they do hold your friends against you, “Nate Silver’s New Science Writer Ignores The Data On Climate Science” by Kiley Kroh attacks Silver for association with Roger Pielke:

I can think of no climate scientists who share Pielke’s startling assessment of Holdren’s views as ‘zombie science.’”

Drunk math is like drunk art. As Unsavoryagents’ Sabo writes:

THE RIGHT KIND OF REBELS … Fuck it! I guess it’s just going to have to be me, I thought. My aim as an artist is to be as dirty, ground level, and mean…

  1. I love his artwork and I’m upset that he doesn’t sell his Hillary line in the form of Posters, Bumper Stickers, T-Shirts, and Other Apparel. Does anyone know if he is selling this stuff anywhere?
