Kiitv googlebombs Sen. Rand Paul zombie at GoogleNews

February 9, 2014

KII*TV, a Texas news outlet, has used search optimization to trick google news into a zombie politics pun.

KII TV , self-proclaimed “South Texas News Leader”, reports from KII News in Corpus Christi, a short seemingly innocuous report of a cosplay zombie race to be run yesterday at 6pm. The headline is “Zombies Take Over North Beach“.

What makes this report interesting is that lower on the page is a link to another KII News story (syndicated from CNN): “Rand Paul warns his former home state, Texas, could turn blue” featuring Senator Paul’s head shot picture image. This article quotes Senator Paul for expressing fears about the dwindling party, and how the GOP needs to be more accepting of other diverse groups, like those with tattoos. Seriously:

“Texas will be a Democratic state within 10 years if you don’t change.”
“We need to have people with ties and without ties, with tattoos and without tattoos; with earrings, without earrings,” he said. “We need a more diverse party. We need a party that looks like America.”

Ok, but now the interesting part.

Because of the placement of that link on the KII pages for the Zombie story, GoogleNews ran the story with the Senator’s portrait attached to the “Zombies Take Over North Beach” article (image below).

These topics are so strikingly connected that it seems highly unlikely that this was completely unintentional (?) Other article links appear on that same Kii page, but the particular placement of the Paul article (in a frame?) got it connected the way it did. A wonderful SEO fete for a subtle zombie political pun (juxtaposition) with strong plausible deniability.

Below two screenshot images, first from the Google News feed for “zombie” and second of the KiiNews page for the zombie-run article showing location of Paul image.

Ooh and look Abraham Lincoln and Zoe Barnes have also photobombed this post (actress Kate Mara also appeared as an undead-ghost-zombie-mistress-Fatal-attraction-something in the first season of “American Horror Story”).
