Korean Zombie against Rising Sun (again)
MMAmania: “Korean Zombie calls out Ronda Rousey for ‘Rising Sun’ shirt sporting ‘symbol of war crimes’” by Steve Borchardt:
You may recall the former featherweight contender’s outrage earlier in the year when Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre walked to the cage wearing a Rising Sun-patterned gi … GSP issued a swift apology following his faux pas, after a letter from Jung pointed out the flag’s controversial past … Now, the Korean Zombie is once again up in arms over another high-profile mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter rocking the Rising Sun look, after he caught wind of UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey wearing a ZUFFA-produced PRIDE FC shirt that features the Japanese military flag on recent episodes of The Ultimate Fighter
Recall previous ZombieLaw: “Semiotics of Atrocity”: Is a Rising Sun always a Swastika? and consider in connection with recent comments by President Obama about Washington Redskins and/or ZombieLaw reference to Cleveland Indians.
Personally, I am torn on these issues. I favor free expression and value history, and we can’t change every symbol anytime some one is offended, but I also value education and think it valuable we discuss the paradoxes of these symbols. Georges St. Pierre apologized when he found out what the symbol meant. We don’t know if Rousey knows the history, he might know and not care, it might all be a publicity stunt (for both fighters). But, the opportunity to discuss the history is what’s important.
The symbol of the Rising Sun has a long history, wikipedia says originally meant good luck before being using in Korean atrocities. An opportunity to revisit the history of Empire of Japan or of zombie Japan.
