PMnews: Nigerian Zombie Governor

August 29, 2013

Yesterday, PM News, “First with Nigerian News”, published “Taraba’s Zombie Gov Dissolves Cabinet” about the Governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Suntai, dissolving the state cabinet.

The “zombie” is only in the headline, and to be fair it’s not clear if “gov” meant governor or government. The article does refer to the governor as “incapacitated” but since the article is about dissolution of the cabinet, the “zombie gov” headline could maybe also refer to the government more than the governor. Nevertheless, it seems many read it as calling the governor a zombie and it created something of a small stir in the comments with many comments expressing offense at the use of the word to describe a governor.

I wonder if “zombie” is a much more offensive term in Nigeria or if Nigerians are more offended by denigrating public officials, or if this is just normal comment chatter:

It is not appropriate to use the word zombie to describe a governor no matter what

Clearly Sunny Akhigbe has not read this blog. And there’s more:

the man is a zombie really? this is an abuse of press freedom.i advise the taraba state goverment to sue this paper for 10million dollars for the use of this word to describe a man who i still alive. a zombie by definition is a dead and buried putrefying matter thats made to walk by means of magical powers. i wonder how thi relates to the ailing governor of taraba state. am sure you are getting your legal team ready cos this insult will not go in vain

Calling the Returnee Governor a Zombie is in bad taste. Pmnews better update the caption unless you have an axe to grind with the governor. …

PM news is nothing but entertainer. I think the editor in chief need some re-orientation or be sacked.

PM news I think you need to retract this head line, as we know the man has no idea what’s happening around .
For me I think the zombies are the people of Taraba if they allow this to happen in my view.

The word ‘zombie has both connotative and denotative meaning, however in dis context it could just mean incapacitated or inactive. And who says d paper do nt have poetic license to use such word for a governor if need be, plss attack d issue and nt d paper joor

Yes! Yes, what abdul said: “plss attack d issue and nt d paper”!!! Because I still have no idea what the heck is going on in Nigerian politics! >?
