Fact-check SC Zombie Voters

July 25, 2013

The Washington Post today reported on the zombie voters from South Carolina. Recall two weeks ago, the official report was released and ZombieLaw declared “No Dead Voters in South Carolina”

Today in Washington Post: “The case of ‘zombie’ voters in South Carolina” by Glenn Kessler digs back to early 2012 when this controversy started as a ploy to pass Voter ID laws before the presidential election. The article embeds video from FoxNews in which the South Carolina Attorney General stated as fact that dead people had voted, a claim now controverted by the official investigation report, also embedded in Kessler’s Washington Post article.

“We just recently learned that there are over 900 individuals who had died before the election (and had voted) and at least 600 of those individuals had died way outside the window that an absentee ballot could have been sent, so we know for a fact that there are deceased people whose identities are being used in elections in South Carolina.”
— South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson (R), on Fox News, Jan. 21, 2012

“We found out that there were over 900 people who died and then subsequently voted. That number could be even higher than that.”
— Wilson, on Fox News, Jan. 12, 2012

“Without Photo ID, let’s be clear, I don’t want dead people voting in the state of South Carolina.”
— South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R), in an interview that aired on Fox News, April 21, 2012

One state lawmaker famously declared: “We must have certainty in South Carolina that zombies aren’t voting.”

Previous reports name that lawmaker as Alan Clemmons (See Mother Jones and IslandPacket. But the quote has also been attributed to DMV director Kevin Shwedo who seems to have been the first source for these unsubstantiated dead voter claims. In a rational world I would expect all of these politicians are now zombies, but in a world where the NSA director can error in testimony to Congress, maybe there are no actual consequences for politically calculated misstatements of fact (?).
