Refusing to let go of body after death

April 27, 2013

io9: “Super sad true zombie crime in Michigan” by Annalee Newitz is about a 64 year old man in Michigan who kept the body of his dead girlfriend for about 7 months. He was arrested on a variety of charges “ranging from mutilating a corpse to identify theft”. As mentioned in some of the comments, this person surely needs mental help rather than a criminal record and hopefully the courts can arrange that.

Meanwhile, this kind of behavior is not unique to human animals. Just yesterday Tim Pool tweeted a picture of a duck refusing to leave his dead mate.

Is the refusal to let go of the past a defining feature of animal consciousness?
How many dead loves are we all refusing to let go?
