John Nichols on Zombie Simpson-Bowles

February 27, 2013

Democracy Now: “Billionaires for Austerity: With Cuts Looming, Wall Street Roots of “Fix the Debt” Campaign Exposed” is a video interview of John Nichols of The Nation and Lisa Graves of the Center for Media and Democracy.

Mr. Nichols refers to “zombie ideas” in references to Simpson-Bowles and the group “Fix the Debt“:

The bottom line is Simpson and Bowles are arguing for austerity and being held up by much of the media as legitimate players when in fact they are advocating for zombie ideas, ideas that have been slain, by the voters and frankly even by Congress, and yet they walk among us.

The zombie quote at about 26:30 in the video on Democracy Now site – or at about 15:30 on their youtube:

This usages of “zombie ideas” is much the same as Paul Krugman’s use of “zombie ideas”. But see also James Dorn’s use of “zombie ideas” with the same meaning but from the other political perspective.

I know this is all just political rhetoric but why do these smart people seem to think that ideas can die? “Ideas are bullet proof”
