Zombie Gingrich suspends campaign but not dead yet…

April 26, 2012

Newt Gingrich has suspended his cheerful zombie campaign for president. Santorum, too, has all but endorsed Romney and so it appears Romney’s Zombie Problems are over.

Just this morning I heard an MSNBC anchor on air refer to Newt Gingrich’s campaign as a “zombie” expected to live for six more days. And a TPM headline this morning was “Newt Of The Living Dead: Is His Zombie Campaign Finally Over?” Now the title of that article’s website reads “Newt Gingrich To Suspend Campaign, Help Romney: Has He Realized His Zombie Campaign Is Already Dead?”

But hasn’t he always been helping Romney, running cover from the very beginning? There was that moment when he started to pull ahead as if he had a chance but hasn’t the whole Gingrich campaign been sort of a diversion tactic? And it worked too, Santorum couldn’t build any steam and the whole primary looked like a circus (remember Perry and Bachmann? Donald Trump!) Gingrich has been around this town forever, he’s an inside operative and his campaign like so much of the Republican circus was never about winning and only about diverting attention to maintain the status quo establishment candidate’s inertia. Romney was unstoppable and the more zombie candidates the better he looked. Similar to Zombielaw’s Wisconsin fake politics. It was Karl Rove style planning “the more weapons the zombie survives, the stronger he gets.”

But zombies don’t just go away. Remember Newt from zombietipandronnie days. And that’s why these clowns haven’t exactly given their endorsement yet. They want some pay to play. Gingrich surely still has Tiffany debts to pay and Santorum has a big family to feed. So like in NASCAR, endorsements cost something (and they should have to wear the logo on their suit in politics too).

These zombie campaigns may be over but these undead zombies will pop up again – cabinet posts? book tours? television talk show host? First a few fundraising dinners. And still someone has to be V.P. (if Marco Rubio says no). They’ll be back. Zombies don’t stay dead.
